Homeowner HVAC Mistakes You Should Avoid

One of the main priorities for homeowners should be the proper maintenance of the home's HVAC unit. However, some homeowners make some mistakes when it comes to this important system. Here are some examples of significant mistakes made by homeowners when it comes to the HVAC system:

Wrong Size

One issue for homeowners is installing an HVAC unit that is the wrong size for the home. Some mistakenly believe that a larger system will cool the home better, while others believe smaller units will be more cost-effective. Unfortunately, neither is true. Each home requires a certain size HVAC unit for it to run efficiently. If you install the wrong size unit in your home, you will notice constant cycling to maintain a proper temperature. You will need to have an HVAC technician come measure your home to see if your system is the right size.

Lack of Maintenance

A homeowner should always take the time to do the proper maintenance on an HVAC. You can do one of the easiest maintenance tasks yourself by changing the air filters every few months or whenever they seem particularly dirty. You should also have your unit inspected professionally at least at the start of the hot and cold seasons to make sure it is ready to go for the ensuing weather temperature.

Low Temperature

Another problem for HVAC systems is a constant low-temperature setting. You may think this will help keep the house cool on a constant basis. However, homes will always cool at the same speed, no matter the temperature. The system will constantly cycle, causing premature wear and tear. Instead, keep the temperature at a constant, moderate temperature to keep the system running optimally.

Closed Air Vents

Some homeowners do not consistently use all the rooms in the home, so they choose to close the air vents in those rooms to help direct air in other areas. Unfortunately, this can do more harm than good. The closure of air vents will eventually cause leaks in the duct and will result in less efficiency and possible damage to the mechanics of the HVAC system.

A properly maintained HVAC system will last for many years. Be sure to have your regular professional inspections to keep everything in tip-top shape. If you notice anything is off about your HVAC system, be sure to have it checked soon than later or it could result in more problems or even a failure to operate.
